GORDON FAMILY
Welcome
to the Gordon family page. The Gordon family, headed by Nochim Yitchak
Gordon and his wife Sarah Itskovna, orthodox Jews, lived in Butrimantz, Lithuania and had at least
6 children: Zlota, Rivka, Leiser, Divora, Beryl, and Liebe. English equivalents are:
Jenny, Rebecca, Louis, Deborah, Barnet and Libby.
In
1900, Beryl arrived in the US, probably through the port of Boston, and is first listed in the
1902 Springfield, MA City Directory as Bernard Gorden a peddler. In 1903, his brother and
sister, Louis and Libby, arrived and they all
lived together at 48 Gray's Ave.
In 1908 Louis changed the
spelling of his last name to Gordon, but Bernard waited until 1912 to
follow suit and simultaneously changed his first name to Barnet.
By
1912, the brothers opened Gordon Bros. Furniture, a second-hand furniture
store located at 619 Main St. According to Barnet's daughter Frances, some
of the profits were used to bring the rest of the family to the USA,
Sure
enough, in 1913 Esther Adelson, Zlota's daughter (Barnet's and Louis' niece)
arrived in the US and went immediately to live with Barnet and
family.
